Who We Help

THE TYPE OF TEENS WE ACCEPT

The boys we take into our program do not usually have problems severe enough to require them to be admitted to a long-term medical or psychological residential facility. For example, there is a scale of 1 to 5 that rates psychological or behavioral problems. If we were to put the teens at JYA into a category, they would range from 0 to 1 on this scale.

JYA focuses on helping kids who are beginning to head in a dangerous direction. We prefer to assist the students before they have advanced too far into destructive behavior or incurred severe psychological damage. For example, we accept teens who have begun using minor drugs recreationally, but our program is not suited for teens who are drug addicts. Children who are on medication can be accepted to the program, but children who have been clinically diagnosed with a severe psychological problem are beyond what we handle at JYA. We accept victims of abuse, but children who have physically abused others are not admitted. Children who have cut themselves or who have been involved in slight self-destructive behavior can be accepted in the program. If they have talked about suicide, and have perhaps even attempted it, they still may qualify. However, if they are a current ongoing high risk of harming themselves or others we cannot accept them into our program (5150 H&S Code).

After reviewing your child’s profile, if JYA does not have the resources to give your child the help he needs, we are also a nation-wide referral service.  We are committed to helping you find an appropriate program for your child.
The above-listed categories are general guidelines for the stages of behavioral and psychological problems we address at JYA. However, all of our decisions regarding admittance are made on a case-by-case basis.
