Our Success Rates

People often want us to give them statistics concerning Julian Youth Academy’s success rate.  The answer to this question is much more complicated than people usually anticipate, but we will do our best to answer it.

A graduate student recently wrote a paper on JYA. The thesis followed up with former students and surveyed them regarding the influence JYA had on their lives. Dramatic success was reported in the following areas:

  • Restored family relationships
  • Major reductions in dangerous behaviors
  • Reduced drug and alcohol use
  • Improved communication skills
  • Ability to resolve conflicts
  • Increased maturity levels
  • Improved academic achievement
  • Decreased rebellion against parents and other authority figures
  • Increased ability to choose friends who are healthy influences
  • Overall reduction of criminal behavior and law enforcement involvement
  • Self-centered behavior replaced by a sense of accomplishment, self-worth, and responsibility

For the specific details of these successful findings, parents can view the report here.

Parents often ask for concrete statistics about JYA students' success. These types of numbers are often misleading because different people have different definitions of success. The bottom line is that a change in the child’s behavior during and after the program depends tremendously on the parents and their level of commitment to the program. If the parents are invested in their son's success and if they are open to the skills taught to them in the parent training seminars, their son will have a much higher chance of succeeding. This often involves following JYA’s advice in making changes at home. If the parents do not listen to JYA's advice and they are not invested in the program, their child will most likely continue to rebel.

That being established, if JYA was forced to give very general statistics concerning the success rate, the statistics would be along the following lines: The students who turn out extremely well make up about 7-10% of our students. The students who clearly do not succeed are also about 7-10%. The other 80-86% will be more successful throughout their lives because of JYA and will generally be much happier people. To list a few specific advantages, students who graduate from JYA will generally have a much more positive outlook on life, an improved capability to forgive others, fewer hostile confrontations, better conflict management skills, a better ability to set and keep boundaries with others, and basic life skills such as budget management.

Students who benefit from the program generally go through a series of phases after they leave JYA. The first year after JYA, students tend to rebel in order to test what they learned. Usually during the second year, students begin to see that the value of the principles that they learned at JYA. At this point, they begin to think about changing their life. However, the third year is when the girls really begin to change for the better. Once again, if you would like to learn more details about this, you can read the master's thesis on JYA in which this pattern is examined more thoroughly.

There are additional factors that can affect the students’ success. The students who become serious about Christianity are able to turn their lives around much more successfully because they have found a purpose for their lives. This sense of hope and purpose are undeniably large factors for the girls who succeed. However, JYA allows the students to make this decision of their own volition; the staff members will not force Christianity on the students. The students' success also depends on how far along they are in their behavioral problem when they enter into the program. JYA attempts to determine how far along the student is beforehand, in order to find a proper program for the student if he is more advanced in his behavioral problem. If the student is enrolled at JYA before the problem advances too far, the student will be more willing to accept JYA’s guidance and implement JYA’s strategies.

As you can see, all these variables make it difficult for JYA to give a concrete success rate. The learning and maturing process is never completed. The parents will also continue to learn and mature, which also supports the student's progress.
