Employment Opportunities at JYAStaffPosition DescriptionJulian Youth Academy Houseparent/Tutor Download Employment Application Download Background Consent Form Staff Positions Available:Julian Youth Academy (Satellite Boys Program) is a Christian residential school that specializes in helping troubled teenage boys. The school is located in the mountains in a rural area in San Diego County. The staff position of houseparent/tutor at JYA (Satellite Boys Program) has many responsibilities. Students are in the classroom for about five hours each day, working in an independent study curriculum. Staff provides supervision and support as tutors in the classroom. Staff members also work in the dorms and help in the kitchen with meal preparation.Staff Responsibilities:Since JYA is a Christian program, the primary responsibility of the staff members is to model their lives to the students as an example of Christ-likeness. The staff providing a good example to the students is an extremely important aspect of the program. The staff members are trained to help the boys through the difficult adjustments and struggles they will experience at JYA.The staff members must be good listeners in addition to being compassionate and loving toward the students. However, being loving involves being firm and aware of potential manipulation. These are difficult skills, but the staff members are able to learn these skills with training and experience. Collectively the staff members are responsible for monitoring students constantly throughout all their activities. JYA’s priorities are to maintain the security and safety of the students. JYA staff members are required to make efforts to minimize tensions and provide a low-key environment so that healing and restoration can take place. Interactions with the students and other staff members are to be conducted with respect and love. Staff Qualifications:The most important qualification is that staff members must have a special desire to work with troubled teens. The students come from many different backgrounds and in many cases have experienced a very dysfunctional family life. Working at JYA is not like working at a summer camp where the students enjoy being in the program. However, many of the students will acknowledge that even though they do not enjoy being at JYA all the time, they realize that being in the program is the right thing for them. Staff members must love working with these kinds of troubled teens despite of the resistant behaviors they display at times.JYA’s structure and procedures have been carefully developed over many years. Much of the program was developed by Phil Ludwig, the program director, based on his experiences and observations of other successful teen programs. JYA’s other procedures were developed through our own experiences. JYA is always willing to discuss new options and is open to ideas that the staff members have. However, JYA asks all staff members to be very careful in following the established procedures. Staff members are required to support each other, work together, do their share, and go beyond what is required to make for greater harmony among the staff members. Teamwork among the staff members is very important for the program at JYA. Great communication skills are also crucial for the staff to be able to work together. Staff member responsibilities are learned over a significant period of time. It could possibly take up to six months in order to reach the point of feeling comfortable with all of the policies and procedures. For this reason, staff members must realize that they need patience to undergo this learning process. JYA desires that each staff member is involved in a Bible study or small group at a church so that they can continue growing during their employment with JYA. Benefits:JYA staff members enjoy many benefits. After three months of employment, JYA provides medical and dental allowance. JYA also owns an apartment in Julian, which is available for use during the staff members’ days off. The staff members also receive a generous time-off policy, which provides them with opportunities for rest and renewal. The laundry facilities at the apartment are free of charge. The JYA staff members are also able to go on outings and participate in other activities together. Many of our staff members state that working at JYA was a great life experience for them. Staff members have claimed that working at JYA provided them with training in the areas of conflict resolution, parenting, and relationship building. Staff members also receive the satisfaction of having a positive impact on children's lives and the lives of their family members. Employment:Julian Youth Academy is an at-will employer. There is a probationary period of 3 months once JYA staff members are hired. JYA staff members are asked to commit to at least one year of employment. This is not a requirement however. The employer or the employee may end the employment at anytime during the employment for any reason.
